A Christian is someone who is in Christ. I have been a Christian since I was a little nine year old boy, when I realised I had made mistakes and messed up and needed to ask Jesus to forgive me. And that faith I had when I was nine is the same faith I have today - I know I make mistakes and mess up and need to ask Jesus to forgive me.
It is the same faith because it doesn’t depend on me, my intellect, my treatment of others, my parents, my upbringing or my work.
Rather being in Christ is entirely dependent on what Jesus has done for me, how he gave his life for me and died upon the cross for me, taking the punishment that I deserved. Jesus didn’t stay dead but he is ALIVE today and seated on the throne at the right hand of God. So being in Christ means that when I mess up I am forgiven, I am set free to live as God created me to live.
When I look at life knowing that I have been set free, everything changes, there is a hope in Christ. Suddenly death is not the end but the beginning of a new perfect eternal life in heaven where “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21 v 4.
